The major events for the 2019/20 session began with the maiden edition of the 2019-2020 Thursday Talk Show  with  Dr E Akubo of the Department of History, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ife-Ife.  He spoke to us on theme of the 2019 Celebration, which was: Young Teachers: The Future of the Profession. He delivered such an uplifting talk and answered very probing questions and a superbly satisfying manner. This led us to invite him back to deliver a similar talk during our World Teachers Day celebration later in the month.

We were honoured to have  for the second edition Dr. Kunle Adeyemo and Dr. Ada Njokanma. The talk topic was: Ear, Nose, Throat and Teeth Disorders’  the show was anchored by , Gbomi  Akinyemi and Darasimi Adisa.  We got to know the Connection between these three parts of the body, their importance, how they should be cared for and also why they shouldn’t be toyed with. It was quite educating. We also had the privilege of learning one of the longest words we know so far; Otorhinolaryngologists, medical specialty which is focused on the ears, nose, and throat. Which It is also called otolaryngology-head and neck surgery because specialists, like Dr. Adeyemo,  are trained in both medicine and surgery. We often call them ear, nose, and throat doctors, or an ENT doctor for short.

World Teachers Day,  5th October 2019 Sunshine joined teachers all over  all over the world to celebrate this special day. As usual in Sunshine the management celebrated her teachers and  showed how much they are appreciated. This year’s celebration also celebrated  the longest serving staff at Sunshine,  Aunty Dora Williams was honored for the twenty years she had served. She was lavished with gifts by the management, PTA parents and colleagues. In her speech Aunty Dora thanked the management for making Sunshine such a conducive place to work and grow as a teacher, she said , ‘I don’t regret being a teacher in Sunshine.’ She also narrated how  parents of pupils saved her life once when  she was very sick at the OAUTH.  She said if not for them she might not be alive today. Other staff who had left were also honoured. We as planned had the honour of Dr E Akubo of the Department of History, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ife-Ife to give us a repeat of his brilliant  talk: Young Teachers: The Future of the Profession on a much broader scale.

Our third episode was PEACE: The bedrock of love in the family, school and community” The Guest Speakers were; Dr Oziegbe, Mrs Ezekpo  and Alhaja Akanbi. The discussion was very enlightening and exposed us fully to importance of peace in our lives and in everything we do.

In collaboration with the IWD Committee, the Press Club marked the 2020 International Women’s Day (IWD)  with the theme; Equality For All: in a very exciting way. In line with the theme, we invited a diverse team as panelist for a seminar to expatiate on the theme; Mr Oladunjoye Opeyemi, Deputy Chairman, KOWA Party, Osun State, Adeyemo Isaac, Chairman KOWA Party, Osun State, Hon. Adejoorin Gbenga, Mr. James Okoro, a male hair dresser and make-up artist, of Much More Hairdressing and Beauty Saloon, Ile-Ife, Mrs…. A female ‘rewire’ in Ile-Ife, Mrs…. a female ‘Okada’ rider in Ile-Ife and Ajide Olubunmi, APC Women’s Leader Ife Central West we also had two parents on the panel; Dr(Mrs.) Akinyemi, and Barr.Makinde

It was a day full of fun and learning!  We  saw a woman ride her bike to the assembly ground with Uncle Timothy as her passenger and the male hair dresser who performed his hair dressing skills with  Aunty Jumoke’s hair. We  also were astonished to hear from a woman who is  into car rewiring. Dr. T.  Akinyemi told us that her husband ties her geles and her daughter studying at Canada makes beautiful hair that fetches her a  good sum of money. She encouraged pupils to develop skills in addition to their academics. The message we all went away with was that once you have an interest persue it without allowing gender issues or stereotyping to interfere or stop you.

On December 1st 2019 Sunshine  marked the World AIDS Day. The  2019 theme was Communities Make The Difference.  As usual  Sunshine staff, pupils and parents worked very hard to raise funds  to support  HIV/AIDS  caused in the community.  From the sell of customized red t-shirts, themed stickers and general donations we raised the sum of three hundred and twenty –five, five hundred and sixty five naira (325,565.00). out of this amount Sunshine decided to support the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Primary Health Care Centre, Eleyele that ran a community awareness programme for traditional birth attendants. Each of the 200 participants were given bottle of JIK bleach to encourage them to continue wholesome hygiene practices. The donations were gladly received.

The 2019 Christmas Committee wowed everyone at Christmas with amazing innovations. From the School Choir’s renditions, outfits, presentation, cuisine and Father Christmas  and his gifts. Uncle Ope and Uncle Yinka proudly presented the school band who played melodious tunes on the keyboards, drums, violins, guitars and recorders.  Most spectacular was the presence of old students who performed on the saxophone, clarinet and drums. It was a joy to see them all.

On  14th February, 2020 Sunshine staff set the day aside to share love.  Each one tells one something special about the other and exchanges gift with a colleague who is randomly selected from a lucky dip. It is always fun and reminds us to look for the good in each other and  always celebrate each other. This year  the PTA joined us to celebrate and showered teaching and non teaching staff with so much love.  The executives were at the service of all staff. The PTA chairman Dr. J. Etebom said it was in return for the love and care teachers show to the  children. To add cream to the  event, a beautiful cake of love  presented by PTA was cut. It really was a GREAT DAY of HONOUR!!!

In May, at the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown, Sunshine did not ‘lockdown’ it’s usual exciting Children’s Day activities. To mark this day, there was an online Debate Competition between Group A and Group B who debated the motion: ‘Covid 19 isa Cloud With a Silver Lining’ . The  Judges were old Sunshine students  residing beyond the shores of Nigeria but joined us on Zoom. The debate was highly competitive showing the caliber of well read, exposed, intelligent and up-to-date pupils of Sunshine. The judges                                                                                                 made remarkable comments on their level of knowledge and exposure. The team opposing the motion won and Ire Akanle emerged as the best overall speaker, even though he debated on the proposing side.  There were also art, essay and poetry competition. This couldn’t have been successful without the help of parents who backed up their children and were part of the audience. From STVN, we say “thumbs up!!!”

To all our new born babies from the month of March to date,we thank God that despite the Covid outbreak, the will and manifestation of God’s glory in these families came to fulfillment. To add to this, we also welcome to all our new Sunshine teaching/non-teaching staff. WELCOME- EKABO to you all!

Our inter-house Sports festival had to be cancelled this year due to the lockdown, but we celebrate with Earth House (Green) who took the lead during the Heats. We will never know if they would have been able to defend this win though.

To draw the curtain for our 2019/20 session news, STVN celebrates the outgoing Primary Six pupils who have made us proud in all their various entrance examinations by passing remarkably well. Congratulate Dr. Bisi Anyadike and all Sunshine staff for another successful session.
